Welcome to St. Matthews

St. Matthews is a very active and vibrant community within Louisville. Located in the heart of the East End it consists not only of charming and historical residential architecture but includes business centers, major hospitals, city parks,  shopping malls plus numerous dining and entertainment areas. St. Matthews is only 8 miles east of dowtown Louisville with easy access to expressways.

St. Matthews became a fourth-class city in June 1954 and comprised two areas that were home to about 6,500 people who had voted to accept annexation into the new city. Originally centered around the intersection of present-day Breckenridge Lane, Shelbyville Road, and Westport Road, the currrent boundaries of St. Matthews are roughly Cannons Lane to the west, I-264 to the south and east, and several subdivisions off of Brownsboro Road to the north. These include Bellewood, Brownsboro Village, Maryhill Estates and Windy Hills. The cities of Richlawn and Norbourne Estates are enclaves within St. Matthews.
